Short Description
Power management and delivery continues to be a technical bottleneck in a number of applications which demand high efficiency at ever decreasing physical size. Hybrid switched capacitor (SC) converters, which combine switched capacitor stages with magnetic components, have gained traction in recent years to address stricter size-performance tradeoffs. However, the control and regulation of hybrid topologies is more complex than conventional DC-DC converters due to the additional high-order dynamics of flying capacitor networks. These complexities, including challenges of voltage balance and converter startup, have historically limited industry adoption of hybrid converters due to concerns over reliability and robustness. This talk will outline some of the challenges in control and regulation for hybrid converters. A simple state space modelling framework will be introduced to provide a direct perspective on flying capacitor voltage balance and state estimation. The talk will outline recently published control strategies including current-mode and nonlinear schemes which can achieve fast transient response while also ensuring voltage balance of flying capacitors. Different topologies will be compared and example hardware implementations will be used to showcase achievable performance.
