PMIC doctoral student Simon Agnew will present his work on the role of mounting and fixturing piezoelectric resonatorsin next-generation inductorless DC-DC converters. While these resonators offer exceptional scalability and power density compared to magnetic components,practical factors like solder bonding and mechanical constraints can cause significant losses and frequency shifts that reduce efficiency. Through simulations and experiments, Simon and coauthors (Lukas Song, Huan Zhao, Kishalay Datta, Yan Li, Jason T. Stauth, William J. Scheideler) unveil strategies to minimize these losses and assess mass augmentation approaches, advancing piezoelectric power conversion toward real-world use. He will also expand on their COMPEL paper, reviewing the state of the art in resonator technology andevaluating material systems and geometries for power applications.
